Dr. Lillian Ndefomiro Mtei

Executive Director

Dr. Lillian Ndefomiro Mtei serves as the Executive Director of KNCV Tanzania, where she leads the organization's efforts to end tuberculosis and address other public health challenges across Tanzania. With extensive experience in public health systems, Dr. Mtei guides KNCV Tanzania's mission to provide equitable, rights-based health services through resilient systems strengthening.

Lillian Mtei is a physician who studied at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She was the Clinical Study Director of the DarDar Health Project, a NIH funded collaborative project between Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUHAS) and Dartmouth Medical School. This was a large phase III tuberculosis vaccine trial involving more than 2,000 HIV infected participants.  Carrying her experience in establishing and running health projects, she was later Programme Director for the Newborn Screening for Child Survival - Sickle Cell Disease Project, a DFID funded project which aimed at establishing the first ever newborn screening programme in the country. In 2018 she was employed as Project Manager by KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, a Dutch international NGO with a vision to have a world free of TB, where she is currently working as the Country Lead of the Tanzania Office while managing two projects.

Lillian is a researcher and consultant who has published extensively and shared knowledge in national and international health fora at improving policies and strategic direction of programme activities.
